Attention Riders!

Burnaby Parks has asked that mountain bikers help keep an eye out for some illegal tree cutting activity on Burnaby Mountain.  A poacher has been cutting down Maple trees on the North Side of Burnaby Mountain.

Up to 50 trees were recently slashed as someone is looking for a specific grain of maple wood.  (Click on this story to see pics of  the damage!)

If you notice any suspicious behaviour or hear a chainsaw (especially during evenings or weekends) poachers may be at work.  Please call 604-294-7000 24 hours a day and report what you hear/see.

Burnaby RCMP say some old growth maple trees on Burnaby Mountain have been illegally chopped down and poached.  (RCMP)

A number of old growth maple trees on Burnaby Mountain, east of Vancouver, have been illegally slashed or chopped down, police said Wednesday.

One of the trees was completely cut down and some of its wood had been poached, Burnaby RCMP said.

"Special equipment would be [needed] to cut these trees down, and the persons doing this have quite the expertise," Cpl. Jane Baptista said in a news release.

Police began their investigation after being contacted by Burnaby's parks department earlier this month, Baptista said.

"The unknown perpetrators slash into many tree trunks looking for the elusive tree that has a particular special grain," she said.

"The tree is then chopped down and slabs of wood are then sawed off from the 'wanted' area of the trunk."

The "big leaf" maple trees are all in a conservation area on the mountain, where a Burnaby bylaw prohibits damaging or removing any vegetation. Violators can incur a $2,000 fine.

Baptista asked hikers and bikers around Burnaby Mountain to contact police if they see any suspicious activity or anyone damaging the trees.
