Yes, it's still bright and sunny out there, but isn't it time to think about getting ready to extend your riding when the dark days set in?  One of the best lights I've come across is advertised in the link below and I highly recomend this.  Jay Buthman, aka SCAR on MTBR, is an enthusiatic night rider himself and his service for his lights is brilliant  ;D .  A cottage industry, niche product assembled in his garage, the product is first class.

Another, cheaper lighting option, but I have no experience of this one!

Yes I have a magicshine myself. Very bright, more than enough run time for the average night ride. I put mine on low for the climb up, full blast for the rip down and still have lots of juice to spare. The helmet mount Geoman sells for it works well too.

Had mixed results with Magicshine last year.  Super bright and great when working, but some quality issues.  Battery or charger died after first charge, which Geoman replaced, very quickly but had to make a second trip down to Pt. Roberts.  Second one cut out on first drop, and a few more times on same ride.  Found the connector between battery and light has contact issues under side pressure, but if twisted around to a stable position, no problems.  All good now, and can't beat the price.

I see that MEC has the Light and Motion Lights in stock.  I have an older Stella 180L and its a good light, but was double the cost of the ones now at MEC.  It won't stay turned on. As NORCO has dropped the distributorship in Canada, support for my light has been through the Light and Motion Website system and I've had to post it back to them. I hope to get it back soon... but won't be holding my breath.

Was out riding last night, between 7 and 9 and, first night ride of the season!

Magicshine batteries recalled, still no response or replacement in sight.  Maybe by next winter?

Time to revive this thread now that the days are getting shorter.

Any recommendations for a decent light setup for night riding? I'm totally clueless on this.

You might have noticed last night that it is getting dark pretty quickly already.

If you want to try night riding in September or during the fall but don't want to spent a lot money, I would go for that cheap light ($30):

It has been recommended to me by John and even if I did not used it much last season and it might not be 1800 lumens, it is pretty decent and you just can't beat the price.
The only issue is that it is coming from Hong Kong and can take up to 30 days to reach your mailbox so you might want to order one or two right now...

Well I guess i'm gunna try this whole riding at night business. Decided to trust my Chinese brothers and get some cheap knock-off lights.

Ordered 2 different lights to try out:

I've ordered computer stuff from DealExtreme before, I know they are good and fairly fast at shipping, dunno about this other site.

Have your lights arrived yet?

If so how do you like them?

OH I forgot to report back! Thanks for reminding.

Yes they both arrived, the one from dx.com arrived in 2 weeks, the other one took a month. Both had no shipping or duty fees.

The first one the battery pack strap broke off right away, no big deal though, I prefer to bungee cord it, more secure than velcro strap. It seems very bright, seemed like one of the brightest at the night ride I went too. The battery pack cable is pretty short on the YINDING YD-2XU2, so best to use that one for a handlebar light. The 2nd one has a longer battery cord, I think John also has 2 of these lights (CREE XM-L).

I haven't gone on a ride more than 2hrs with them, but they both lasted that time on high no problem.

Batteries have lasted me for 3 rides or more. 6 plus hours on bright. My oldest one is 2 years and has been used and abused. Still works. Cords will break but can easily be repaired or replaced. My favourite is this one so far. I like the bungie for easy on and off the handle bars. It also has the higher capacity battery. Just be prepared to wait 4-8 weeks for delivery.
