This Sunday, May 2nd, we are scheduled for Burke. We are leaving from the gun club at 10am (SHARP) (http://www.nsride.com/directions2010.html#burke), so make sure you are there earlier than that.

There is a pretty big climb up the trails, like Fromme, except steeper and looser. Make sure that you bring a snack and some water!

Beginner-Intermediate All-mountain : Mike, Sheldon

Intermediate All-mountain: Keiko, Bob

Advanced All-mountain: Richard, Marcus, Brian

Trails to be determined, but will probably include Triple Crown, Franks, etc.

Hi

I want to add to the description of the trails on Burke for those of you who have not ridden Burke. First of all the trails are very loamy, kinda like what the North Shore was like 20 years ago. It would be really nice for the trails to remain this way. If you are the type of rider who likes to drag your rear brake on steep down hill sections, I will be there to help you with this, as I am bringing my best cable cutters. ;D Please remember that all of your controlled braking comes from the front brake. Not sure if it is this way right now, but the bugs can be brutal, you may wish to bring bug repellant and ride with your mouth closed. If the bugs are bad please get your gear on fast, I won't be waiting for people to get their I Pods sorted out, well actually I will, but in side my head I will be saying bad things about you, if I am getting eaten. Lastly the climb is brutal and it takes around hour to get to the top. It's steep. Bring a good lunch. If the weather is good I may try for 2nd lap for those that have gas in the tank and if I have any as well.

Thanks Sheldon

To add to Sheldon's post, Burke is a great ride All-Mountain type of ride. The very loamy, grippy trails are both flowy and technical, so armour  is recommended as there aren't too many rocks, but a fair amount of roots, depending on what trails you are riding. The pedal up is a good aerobic workout but don't be put off by a good climb as the trails coming back down are more than worth it! This is a very fun and rewarding ride for those who are looking to push their technical skills a bit further and like to challenge themselves.

Enjoy the ride!

Just incase it sounded like I was trying to scare people, I want to be clear that Burke is my favorite hill. The down is worth the grunt up. I will be working my extreme walking skills for the push up. Just be kind to her! Weather looks good, it's going to be fun.

Burke is a great mountain, and like Sheldon and others this is my favorite local riding area. There are some technical trails that will challenge you but those will be left to the advanced group, which will cover a lot of ground as well. You need to climb to get to the good stuff so be prepared to do a lot of it.

See you there.

Hey everyone, we've been keeping an eye on the weather, and we'll make a call tomorrow when the 6:30 PM Environment Canada forecast comes out about whether to keep the ride at Burke or move it to Fromme.

If we move it, the meeting time and all the groups will be exactly the same.

Please check back here tomorrow evening!

Riding Fromme in the wet may not be a good alternative. :'(

Just saying....

Looks like the weather is going to be good for us tomorrow, so the scheduled Burke Ride is going ahead as planned.

There was quite a bit of agony leading up to this weekend: they were forecasting 25-35mm of rain! Whenever we have weather like this we re-evaluate where the ride is and adjust accordingly. Always a good idea to check the forum before the ride.

See you on Burke tomorrow.

Fun ride though!

This was probably the wettest Burke ride I've ever done in the 15 years or so that I've been there, but it was still fun. We were so wet and cold by the time we got to the bottom of Lower Vic's that we rode straight to the cars. Bad weatherman......bad!

I hosed my armour and it looked like chocolate milk dripping out.

For sure the worst conditions I have seen up there. Bet ya there were a few in my group who in the end, wished they had followed the rest of us down the fire road. The highlight of the day was the kick ass brunch buffet at the Gill Netter Pub for $11. Breakfast and Beer!
